Legionella Risk Assessment

Water Hygiene and Legionella Risk Assessment
Lab Works water safety team of assessors and microbiologists undertake surveys and provide risk assessment reports on all aspects of the system design, installation, condition, operation and usage that present a Legionellosis risk. This is based on guidance in Water Quality Regulations. Following completion of the risk assessment a comprehensive report is provided, which concludes with a detailed list of prioritized risk rated recommendations on the most suitable course of action to take.
Legionella pneumophila is the bacterium responsible for Legionnaires’ disease and is often present in natural sources of water. When the bacteria enter man-made water systems and are provided with ideal growth conditions (e.g. temperature and nutrients) they grow rapidly. When these bacteria are released as an aerosol (showers, spa baths, cooling towers, taps and other water fittings) they can be inhaled and cause the disease in susceptible individuals.
Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia that primarily affects those members of the population who are at risk due to age, illness, immunosuppression, smoking, etc., and can be fatal. Legionella bacteria can also cause less serious illnesses, which are not fatal or permanently debilitating, but which can affect all people.
Legionella bacteria are common in nature and can easily colonies in man-made environments such as hot and cold water distribution systems where they are able to multiply at temperatures between 20°C and 45°C. Areas of particular risk are those containing dirt, sludge or scale and in stagnant waters and plant. Systems at risk include:
- Water systems incorporating a cooling tower
- Water systems incorporating an evaporative condenser
- Hot and cold water distribution systems
- Showers
- Other plant and equipment containing water which is likely to exceed 20°C and which can release a spray or aerosol during operation or maintenance
Lab Works East Africa has qualified occupational hygienists who can provide initial Legionella risk assessments in accordance with the Health and Safety Executive’s guidance publication L8 “Legionnaires’ disease. The Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems” and the COSHH regulations. Technical reports detail the risk level of your water systems, any remedial action required and a water management programme as required.
Wastewater/Trade Effluent
Lab Works EA designs, builds and operates monitoring stations for use in the harshest of environments, including storm water systems, sewerage systems and wastewater treatment plants.
